LASIK laser eye surgery was developed in the late 1990s and today represents the most up-to-date surgical procedure for vision correction. However, with advances in technology several clinics are now offering customised LASIK . No so long ago patients wanting laser eye surgery were limited to a choice of PRK and LASEK . Each of the three procedures works in the same way; by permanently re-shaping the cornea using an excimer laser, but LASIK has the shortest recovery time and is the least painful. Many clinics further refine this procedure with visual mapping systems such as Wavefront , and it's this combination of technologies that constitutes customised LASIK .

Wavefront technology is a state of the art procedure that allows surgeons to build up a personalised picture of each individual eye. When used in conjunction with LASIK it can achieve substantially better results than with LASIK alone. In fact, some clinics claim that it can actually improve vision beyond the 20/20 range (to allow you to see more clearly than you would have with glasses or lenses). Of course you'll have to pay more for the enhanced procedure, but it's an additional cost that's well-worth investigating.
Customised LASIK also allows some patients who weren't able to have laser eye surgery (on medical grounds) the opportunity to correct their vision. The potential for minute aberrations in the cornea to be corrected means problems that couldn't be solved are now treatable. Patients who fall into this category include those with thin corneas or large pupils.
The procedure itself involves cutting a flap in the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) and then exposing the tissue beneath. The corneal tissue is then ‘reshaped' using the laser before the cornea is closed to allow recovery. Customised LASIK ensures that the laser procedure is more accurate because it uses a 3D map of the cornea, which in turn decreases the likelihood of post-operative complications. Studies comparing both procedures have found that customised LASIK is markedly more effective in treating vision deficiencies and consequently most eye care professionals recommend it.
